How personally and professionally disappointing to see this less than forthright video, from a site which also offered:

"Learn How Make Fireball - Watch more funny videos here"

Sigh. There are many things that can rightfully be classified as funny in this world. Playing with fire is not one of them.

I would strongly discourage anyone from following the suggestions on the video without first consulting a trained fire performer or illusionist in person, and then speaking with a vocational Firefighter, Paramedic and especially a Physician or Nurse working in a burn center. Then check with your medical and liability insurance provider before you assume you'll have coverage for injury or damage when playing with fire. Go ahead and ask. I'll dare to say that you can't afford to play with fire.

Each of the professionals mentioned above can likely share a personal story of tragedy brought forth by someone merely 'playing' with fire.

It all seems so simple in the video... almost as easy as the illusionist sawing a person in half during a stage show.

If it all goes awry... who do you or they hold accountable? You guessed it: the man or woman who stares back at you in the mirror.

Please do fun things. Fire is not a toy.

What's the info on the song?

I tried it like you had it, and you have deffinantly left something out seeing as how it was much hotter then you displayed it being.

Don't worry, I'm not stupid and i assumed as much. But there is obviously something you didnt mention as the video shows you holding it between your fingers. Which is most certainly not possible.

What's the name of the song!!?? I must have it!

you should specify what kind of lighter fuel you have been using cus ive read alot of comments of people using zipper fuel and burning their hands, please do a more indepth tutorial on how to make fireballs.

Do you know the science behind it?

Geez, firefighter dude, yes, there are idiots in the world, but I am going to try this, and if it works like he said, my 9 year old is going to be blown away...Life is not about following every rule, and I don't think this video was made to be funny. What it is is interesting. There are so many dangers out there, A friend of mine just dropped dead the other day, massive heart attack. Liabilities, Tragedies, my god, man, do you even leave the house? Sometime soon, i would like to see a world made up of people who have the guts to take responsibility for their own actions, I intend to see if this works, I"ll use the Ronson stuff in the video, If it DOESNT work, i will throw it away and no one will be the wiser. BUT if it does work, I will amaze my son one night by the campfire, and I can tell you now, he'll have the instructions YOU gave as well. BUT.

I'm tired of big brother always watching me and telling me what to do.

Ps, bet i'm older than you.

This is definitely a hoax but how well done! These guys took in tons of people before anyone caught on!

Decent production value + entertaining idea - chance of light burns = B-

Audrey Heffner said...

Ok, now tell me how the hoax was done!

Unknown said...

ok tried it with zippo fuel,
indeed burned the fingertips of my hand (believe me im a chemist, i know how a burning reaction on my fingertip feels).

but i'm intrigued about the fact that a while ago i heard people say burning flames with lower heat. this expirience will not be my last with these "balls"

indeed what there is said about fire risk is true, but i feel i am aware of these risks and know how to handle with them.

Audrey,

Thanks for the note, and my condolences for the loss of your friend.

As mentioned in my initial post, this is a less than forthright video.

Please know that was the focus of my message.

I didn't say not to do it, but rather suggested what to do and who to speak to *before* you might try it.

It seems that others openly agree that more knowledge is neccessary than is conveyed by this video, and all I suggested was to seek knowledge before you hurt yourself or someone else.

Severe burns are nasty, and 'playing' with something as simple as a candle can cause needless and debilitating injury that causes pain beyond one's comprehension.

I know.

In closing, please know that I'm not into telling people how to live their lives, but rather suggesting that they arm themselves with knowledge from more than one source, and ideally from experts before they needlessly tempt fate.

Oh, and since you asked...

I sadly do leave the (fire)house more often than I'd like to do and deal with this:

Audrey, I enjoyed your cooking and artistry blogs, and do warmly welcome you and your son to visit a Neighborhood Fire Station whenever you're in Los Angeles.

Audrey Heffner said...

Thanks, Brian!

Visiting the Firestation was the FIRST thing we did with him.

OO and you have to go see my friends novel, which she's been writing longer than that Leary guy's been alive:

http://sullyslife.blogspot.com

you have to go into the archives for the beginning, but she's a hoot, and quite good, and a total firehouse fanatic.

Sometimes she has a sneaking suspicion that somebodys seen her plots and borrowed, but I don't even think she cares. Its set in Cleveland, i think.

Thanks, and I have no intention of trying anything til the guys here figure it out for me, or tell me its undoable.

OOO and i can't imagine hitting that Youtube link, after I saw the buttburn! HOW DOES ONE BURN THEIR ASS? Don't worry, i'm not going to try it, ha. I do know a guy who burned the front part reaching for something on the stove, just one little touch put him flat out for 2 weeks. Bandaged to the hilt. Couldnt go out of the house like that. I just cant for the life of me, figure out how the buttburn happened! Please tell, and Thanks again Brian. Glad you saw my stuff, cause it's an insight I wish all people had when they talk to me. Like creds. You're alright, Brian.

I'm 15 and I just tried it and now 2 of my finger has serious injured!!
naa just kidding, not stupid Only I could take it in my hand but not for so long! I live in Holland and I bought something in dutch what I think mean "Lighter Fuel"
Oh I have both respect for LAFD and for Audrey ;) because living your life at the best is like awesome
Sorry for my wrong english, This summer Ill go on holiday to america maybe I can buy that stuff there ';) But did you already tried it Audrey cuz I want to know if when you used the same stuff as he did it still hurts? (sorry for very wrong sentence XD)

cya

Audrey Heffner said...

o Hell no! I'm not trying it until somebody posts something very specific about the fuel used and the reason it doensn't burn as hot, I want empirical evidence! Whatever that is. Im not lookin it up, and it sounds good.

hi Ppl =D I saw this video on youtube and tried it out, but I used Butane fuel, Kingás trademark, I don't think u got these on US, or whatever, btw, I'm from brazil.
Well, the experiment worked, but due to the type of fuel that I used (Butane Fuel), the fireball did lighty burnt my hand, but only if I let it more than, like 2 seconds on a same spot. I don't know if using that lighter fuel does make the blue fire burn less hotter,as it seems that on the fuel lighter official site, this Ronson Ligther Fuel uses "Naphtha", I don't knnow if it uses "distilled Naphtha" cause, that last one is known to produce low temperature, on the BLUE part of the flame. But I guess the the owner of the video could warn ppl that it's HOT actually, as in the video it seems that he doesn't feel nothing at all xP
Gonna buy some lighter fuel later to try out too \o\o\o\.
btw, I did a video, if u guys wanna check it out:

Brian Humphrey, don't be such a fun spoiler! Fire is overrated. It's just material reacting with oxygen. Causing heat, and atoms to send photons. Okay?

I don't know why, but many people like fire, like myself. You CAN play with it as much as you like. But you HAVE to know what you are doing. And if you burn your house/hand/clothes, blame yourself sucker, atleast NOW you learnt something. Awesome video, have been having a lot of fun with these ^_^

(I mean no offence. I'm just sick of all the noobs you are trying to protect ;)

Thesms,

Thanks for the directed reply. No offense was taken, and in fact I thank you for reiterating most of what I said... namely: don't take everything you see in (one) video as fact, and learn and understand exactly what you are doing before you decide play with fire.

Tried this with Newport lighter fluid http://www.keen-newport.com/newport_access.htm cuz that's what we have here in Malé. I can tell u that it's quite hot in the hands. I can't hold it no more than 2 seconds in one spot and even if I keep moving it around my hands can barely take it for 5 lousy seconds.

Btw, try this in a clear spot cuz when u feel the heat u WILL throw it away quite hard and it might roll under yr furniture or wherever.

I tried it with simple alcohol and it stayed blue through and only a little bit hot. It ran out very quickly, though. Out of some twenty times I tried setting the little cotton cloth ball in fire, it caught fire completely some seven times. It did look pretty awesome. I wore goggles and two plastic aprons just in case, and nothing bad happened.
Thank you, firefighter guy, for all your advice.

Hello to you all

Why does the creator of these fireballs never answer to our questions ? Is it because the video maker cheated in some maner ?

It seems to work according to this link : http://chemistry.about.com/od/funfireprojects/a/fireballs.htm

But with Naphta lighter fuel only, which has a lower temperature blue flame. Lower doesn't mean it is cold !!! it is very hard to keep in hands !!!

Be careful until the guy tells everyone what he soaks his hands with before playing with his fireballs

Audrey Heffner said...

Yes, i think its a bad bad joke.

Notice in the video that the oscillation of the flame varies. It is slowest when the ball is held in one position for any period of time. I believe that the video editor simply slowed the film down at those times (when the ball was resting in the palm). I suspect it is easy to burn bare skin. Perhaps leather gloves would be worth trying.

Now I'm not saying use of fireballs is 100% safe. My friends and I have been burned in the past by not using our utter most caution, but we do use and enjoy the act of making and playing with fireballs.

The reason they don't burn our hand(usually) is because of the fuel we use.
(Naptha. Other fuels eather burn too hot or too fast).
When burning Naptha the coolest part of the flame will initially be the part directly around the ball (especially at the base). This is the part that touches the hand. However, I'll admit its still pretty hot, if you move the ball around fast enough you shoudln't get burned, but my friends and I who play with fire usually always have calouses on our hands. (from being burned and the constant heat causing skin damage) so we can usually do it for longer and don't have to move the ball around as much.

If you do decide to make a homemade fireball, I highly advise you wash your hands after adding the fuel to the ball. This is just an extra step to making sure you get rid of any fuel on your hand.

Basicly the trick is to not get the fuel on your hands, doing so will set your hands on fire.(first time I made a homemade fireball that was my result sadly.)

If its your first time experincing with a fireball you should expect the ball and cloth to get very hot very quickly. You shouldn't use it long the first time, that is pretty much asking to get burned.

I'm not recommending its safe to anybody whos willing to try this, the conciquences are your own fault.

It may sound simple enough, but I stress that its not.
My friends and I crave for adrenaline, but were not going to stop just because we may or may not injure ourselfs. Our trick is its all down to Naptha fuel and the speed of moving your hands.

dude, yhis is sickk, im trying it right away =D

I found the secret you must dump out some lighter fluid from the bottle and fill the difference with water, something around two parts L-fluid one part water. I tried and it works but I don't know the exact ratio mine didn't look as bright but it was close. I know that it takes dumping some L-fluid out adding some water and mixing it. Make sure the balls are tight and when the cloth starts to burn it will start turning black, the amber's will burn you. If it burns drop it. Experiment on your drive way have a water bucket or snow around and don't use too much fluid.

and keep the ball moving in the video he keeps the ball moving a fast rate in short distances.
